Shower Screen Door Repairs Sydney
In short
- Five parts fail. Roller carriages, the track, pivot pins or hinges, the door seal, and the catch. All five are replaceable.
- The glass is usually fine. A whole new screen is only needed if the frame has corroded through or the panel is cracked.
- Most doors are fixed on the first visit. Common Sydney roller and seal profiles are carried in the van.
- Sliding doors fail at the rollers. Hinged doors fail at the pivots. The symptom tells us which before we arrive.
Signs your shower screen door needs repair
What actually fails on a shower screen door
1. Roller carriages
2. The track and bottom channel
3. Pivot pins and hinges
4. The door seal
5. The catch and handle
Door types we repair, and what fails on each
| Door type | How it is built | Usually fails at |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding | Two panels running in a top or bottom track, used where a door cannot swing out | Roller carriages, then the channel |
| Pivot / hinged | One panel on wall-mounted hinges or a top-and-bottom pivot | Pivot pins, then the catch |
| Frameless | 10mm toughened glass on brackets, no surrounding frame | Hinges and glass-to-glass fittings |
| Semi-frameless | Framed fixed panel with a frameless door hung off it | Door seal, then hinges |
| Framed | Aluminium all the way round, 4mm or 5mm glass, common in older builds | Rollers, then frame corrosion |
| Bi-fold | Two narrow panels hinged together, folds inward | Centre hinge and the top guide |
Can the door be repaired, or does it need replacing?
| Repair the door when | Replace the door when |
|---|---|
| Rollers, pivots, seals or the catch have worn | The glass is cracked or chipped on an edge |
| The track is dirty, or bent in one section | The frame has corroded through at the base |
| The door is out of alignment but the frame is square | The opening has moved and the door no longer fits it |
| The hardware profile is still manufactured, or has a compatible substitute | The glass is annealed rather than toughened |
How we repair a shower screen door
What your quote depends on
- Which part has failed. Seals and catches are the cheap end. Hinges and glass cost more.
- How the door is built. Framed doors use thinner glass and standard profiles. Frameless uses 10mm glass and heavier hardware, so the same fault costs more to fix.
- Size and access. Anything over 2100mm, or a second-floor bathroom with a tight stairwell, takes two people.
- Whether the parts are still made. Most profiles are. On a screen from the eighties we may need a compatible substitute.
Why the glass standard matters on a shower door
Every panel that goes into a shower in Australia has to be Grade A safety glass under AS 1288, the standard that governs glass in buildings. Toughened glass is heat-treated so that if it does break it crumbles into blunt granules instead of shards, which is why shower screens are made from it and why a chipped edge is treated as urgent rather than cosmetic.

Typical door callouts
Both roller carriages had flattened after about eight years. New carriages, channel cleaned out, door realigned and water-tested. One visit.
Worn pivot pins on a 10mm door. Hinges replaced, door reset square, catch realigned so it holds shut properly again.
Door was out of alignment and the bottom seal had hardened. Realigned first, then a new seal fitted, then re-tested.

Questions about shower door repairs
It is one of the cheaper repairs we do. Nine times out of ten the roller carriages have worn flat and the door is riding on the track itself rather than rolling above it. New carriages, a clean-out and a realignment sort it, and the common Sydney profiles are carried in the van so it is usually finished on the first visit.
Yes. The door panel lifts out of the track on its own while the fixed panel and the frame stay where they are. On most screens the whole job is done without disturbing the silicone, which is why there is nothing to re-seal and no curing time afterwards.
Sometimes. Some frameless hinges have a built-in adjustment that lets the door be reset without new parts. More often the pivot pin itself has worn, and once that happens no amount of adjustment holds, because the door drops back under its own weight within a few weeks. The glazier can tell which it is in a couple of minutes on site.
Usually a hardened bottom seal that no longer touches the hob, or a door sitting slightly out of square so the gap is wider at one end. Occasionally the silicone bead where the frame meets the tile has lifted and water is tracking behind it. We check alignment first, because a new seal fitted to a dropped door wears out again quickly.
Most of the time, yes. Roller and seal profiles have been fairly consistent in Australia, and where an exact match has been discontinued there is normally a compatible substitute that fits the same channel. If nothing fits, we say so rather than bodging something in, and then it becomes a conversation about replacing the door.
Some people do. The risk is the lift: a framed door panel is heavier than it looks and awkward to hold at an angle, and toughened glass that knocks a tiled edge can shatter without warning, sometimes minutes later rather than straight away. If you do attempt it, have a second person take the weight and keep the panel away from hard edges. Getting the right carriage for your channel profile is the other sticking point.
A roller, seal or catch job is usually under an hour. Hinge work on a frameless door takes a little longer because the panel has to come down and go back up square. Anything that needs a new glass panel takes two visits, because the panel is measured on site and cut to your opening.
Regularly. Access can be arranged directly with the tenant, invoices go to the agency or the owners corporation, and a written scope can be provided where several bathrooms need to be worked through in one building.
